CTT Names Atlas O 40’ Wood Reefers “Instant Classics”

In the short time they've been on the market, the Atlas O, LLC 40’ Wood Refrigerator cars have made quite an impact. These “Steam Era Classics” have caused O scale model railroaders to take notice, and thousands of these colorful cars have made their way to these enthusiasts’ homes for operation and/or display.

Now, the popular O scale magazine, Classic Toy Trains, has named these historic models “Instant Classics” in their March 2006 issue. In an article by Roger Carp, the fascinating history of the evolution of the model railroader’s version of the real-life 40’ Wood Reefers is retold, and very nice things are said about this nostalgic venture.

“Over the past six years, Atlas O has released a series of O gauge freight cars that have become instant collectibles,” Mr. Carp wrote. “Atlas O has been bringing out excellent and affordable cars unlike anything else on the O gauge market…” Mr. Carp relates the tale of the late Robert Wagner, a skilled hobbyist and fan of the real billboard reefers, which appeared on tracks across the nation in the early part of the 20th century. The Interstate Commerce Commission halted the use of freight cars for commercial advertisements in 1935. Mr. Wagner left his extensive collection of photographs and information to Mr. Robert Lavezzi, a fan of Atlas products, who approached the company about producing its own line of replicas in O scale. Chairman of the Board Tom Haedrich and Atlas O, LLC Vice-President Jim Weaver knew a good opportunity when they saw one and the rest is history. Over 200 decorating schemes have already been produced.

“The cars in this series are a tribute to Bob’s modeling, his diligent research, and passion for detail and accuracy,” said Jim. “It is our hope that these models will preserve the model railroading legacy that he left us, as well as saluting an important and colorful era in the history of American railroading.”

Also making history is the colorful First Edition Atlas O, LLC 40’ Wood Reefer Collector’s Guide, 2000 – 2004. Including a dedication, welcome, history, photos, and a photographic depiction of every 40’ Wood Reefer made by Atlas O during that time period, the Guide is a “must-have” for billboard reefer enthusiasts. According to Jim, another booklet featuring our 36’ Wood Reefers will be produced when that line reaches its five-year anniversary in 2007.
