Boy Scout Badge Package Now Available

The Atlas HO Scale Code 100 track components recommended by the Boy Scouts of America to create the “Timesaver” layout requirements of their Railroading Merit Badge are now available at a special discounted price from Atlas. If purchased separately at retail cost, these items total $146.60 without tax.

Atlas is pleased to make the package available to verifiable scout groups at the reduced cost of $100, (plus 7% sales tax for New Jersey residents). The package includes the sectional track and components found on pp. 59 & 60 of the Boy Scouts of America Railroading Merit Badge pamphlet, where Atlas products are specifically recommended.

The “Timesaver” is a switching game that tests problem-solving skills to see who can deliver freight cars to their destinations in the shortest time.

“Model railroading is an educational hobby whose popularity is growing,” the pamphlet states. “Model railroading clubs exist worldwide and the number of individuals operating their own model railroads is increasing. Model railroads often have amazingly realistic scenery and frequently these modeled scenes represent portions of actual railroads. Many are now operated in the same way that real-life railroads are run.”

The pamphlet discusses attending hobby shows, joining model railroading clubs and how model railroads mimic the real thing, offering lessons in history, carpentry, mathematics, geography, economics and more.

“Bringing youth into this traditional hobby and retaining their interest is an ongoing focus of our marketing and outreach,” said Atlas Marketing Coordinator Jarrett Haedrich. “Model railroading today offers just as much technology, challenge and excitement as other youth pastimes, with many life-enhancing aspects included, and can be enjoyed by the entire family, as well as passed from parents to children.”
